UPSC Engineering Services Examination (ESE) 2025: Revised Application Window, IRMS Inclusion, and Exam Date Postponement

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced significant updates regarding the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) 2025. These changes have been introduced following the government’s decision to include the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) in the ESE 2025 recruitment process. This press release outlines the revised application dates, the inclusion of new sub-cadres for IRMS, and the postponement of the ESE 2025 preliminary and main examinations.

Key Updates to the ESE 2025

New Application Window and Changes for Applicants

The official notification for ESE 2025 was issued on September 18, 2024, with the application deadline set for October 8, 2024. However, following the government’s decision to include recruitment to the IRMS through the ESE, a new application window has been opened.

  • New Application Window: Candidates who missed the initial window can now apply from October 18, 2024, to November 22, 2024.
  • Correction/Modification Opportunity: Applicants who submitted their applications between September 18 and October 8, 2024, do not need to reapply. However, they have the option to update or modify their details during this new application window. Additionally, a correction/edit window will be available from November 23 to November 29, 2024, allowing candidates to make any further changes to their applications.

Inclusion of Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) in ESE 2025

The most significant update to ESE 2025 is the inclusion of recruitment for the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) through this examination. The Ministry of Railways has issued the Indian Railway Management Service (Amendment) Rules, 2024, which outlines this inclusion.

  • IRMS Sub-cadres in ESE: The IRMS recruitment through ESE 2025 will cover positions in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Signal & Telecommunication, and Stores Sub-cadres. Recruitment for the Traffic, Accounts, and Personnel Sub-cadres will continue to be conducted through the Civil Services Examination.

The addendum to the rules and notice for ESE 2025, issued on October 18, 2024, includes these updates, and candidates are advised to carefully review the changes before applying.

Postponement of ESE 2025 Preliminary and Main Exams

To ensure that candidates have sufficient time to prepare for the examination, UPSC has also decided to postpone the ESE 2025 exams.

  • Revised Exam Dates:
    • The ESE (Preliminary) 2025 exam will now be held on June 8, 2025.
    • The ESE (Main) 2025 exam has been rescheduled for August 10, 2025.

This postponement provides aspirants with additional preparation time to ensure their readiness for both stages of the examination.
